James’s story is one of resilience, leadership and a strong desire to make a difference in his community. With dreams of becoming a police officer, he is determined to inspire others and be a positive influence for youth – especially within his Pasifika community in Auckland.
From an early age, James was set on joining the police force, motivated by a desire to be a good role model and a positive representation of law enforcement. He credits his mother for discovering Skills Ignite and supporting his dreams. Though he initially felt shy in his new learning environment, James quickly warmed to the friendly, welcoming atmosphere of the classroom.
He describes the learning space as fun and engaging, largely thanks to his tutor, Prashant Naikar. Prashant’s positive attitude and supportive outlook made a lasting impact – James describes him not just as a teacher, but as a mentor and role model.
While James thrived in hands-on activities, drawing on his background in sports, he initially found theoretical work – especially maths and paperwork – challenging. But he knew that success required effort. With determination and focus, he turned those challenges into opportunities for growth.
A standout memory from his time at Skills Ignite was participating in tag tournaments with his classmates. These events not only strengthened their friendships but also showcased the unity, teamwork and determination that defined their group. As James puts it, they were of “one-mind and one-heart.”
Throughout his journey, two pieces of advice have guided him. The first is from Prashant, who often reminds students to “carry a good conscience and always know the difference between right and wrong.”
The second is James’s own reflection:
“Be strong through the tough times—it will all be worth it in the end. Don’t let negative comments or mistakes define you; let them push you to reach your goals.”
James’s story is a testament to perseverance, positivity, and the power of lifting others as you rise. His journey continues to inspire those around him—proof that with dedication and heart, meaningful change is always within reach.
